چکیده

Surface hydrographic and biogeochemical properties were measured contemporaneously at high spatial density during a w x transit from Chesapeake Bay, across the Middle Atlantic Bight MAB and Gulf Stream to the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda w x from 28 September–2 October 1996. Discrete samples were collected for total organic carbon TOC , dissolved organic w x w x w x w x carbon DOC , total organic nitrogen TON , dissolved organic nitrogen DON , total carbon dioxide TCO and alkalinity 2 w x TA . Continuous measurements of temperature, salinity, fluorescence, seawater pCO and atmospheric pCO were also 2 2 Ž . Ž . Ž . collected. Estuarine waters of Chesapeake Bay salinity)20 had high pCO )600 matm and high TOC )200 mM , 2 Ž . Ž . DOC )190 mM and TON )20 mM concentrations reflecting the riverine input of terrestrial organic matter. Low Ž . Ž . seawater pCO concentrations ;350 matm , compared to MAB waters ;370–430 matm , were observed in the offshore 2 plume of the Chesapeake. High TOC, TON, TCO and alkalinity concentrations were observed within a filament of low 2 salinity shelf water abutting the western wall of the Gulf Stream. These filaments are apparently advected off the shelf near Cape Hatteras and subducted beneath the Gulf Stream. We estimate that this process will export shelf organic carbon into the North Atlantic basin at a rate ;3–31=10 g C year, depending on the amount of water advected off the shelf. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Estimating the mean ocean-bay exchange rate of the Chesapeake Bay

[1] A model of the salt balance in the Chesapeake Bay is discussed, which takes into account only time-dependent riverine input and mean ocean-bay exchange. Estimates of (spatial) mean bay salinity are made using two different data sources: a 16 year record of surveys taken by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay Program, and a 10 year record of hydrographic sections taken in th...

Chesapeake Bay nitrogen fluxes derived from a land‐estuarine ocean biogeochemical modeling system: Model description, evaluation, and nitrogen budgets

The Chesapeake Bay plays an important role in transforming riverine nutrients before they are exported to the adjacent continental shelf. Although the mean nitrogen budget of the Chesapeake Bay has been previously estimated from observations, uncertainties associated with interannually varying hydrological conditions remain. In this study, a land-estuarine-ocean biogeochemical modeling system i...

High-resolution mapping and time-series measurements of 222Rn concentrations and biogeochemical properties related to submarine groundwater discharge along the coast of Obama Bay, a semi-enclosed sea in Japan

High-resolution mapping along the coast and time-series measurements of the radon-222 (Rn) concentrations in the shallow zone in a semi-enclosed sea, Obama Bay, Japan, were undertaken in 2013. The temporal and spatial variations in the Rn concentrations were analyzed in parallel with meteorological conditions, physical–biogeochemical characteristics, and the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD...

Mapping plankton distribution in the Bay of Biscay during three consecutive spring surveys

Nano-microplankton biomass, mesozooplankton biomass and hydrographic features were measured with mesoscale spatial resolution during 3 surveys in the Bay of Biscay between March and June 2004. Regions of high plankton biomass were associated with mesoscale physical structures. Generalized additive models (GAMs) based upon surface salinity, surface temperature and stratification of the water col...

Temporal variability in nitrification rates and related biogeochemical factors in Monterey Bay, California, USA

The scales of temporal variability in the rate of ammonium oxidation and a suite of related biogeochemical parameters were investigated in the surface layer of the water column of Monterey Bay, California, on the west coast of the USA. Samples were collected on bimonthly (approx. every 2 mo) cruises during the course of 2 yr. The signal of El Niño was evident in the water column temperature and...
